Competitions Guide

Ilkeston Swimming Club is involved in a number of competitions and events throughout the year.  Below is a guide to the competitions for those that are looking to get more involved in the competitive side of the club.

 

Club Championships

The club championships are open to all Ilkeston SC members only and is an ideal starting competition for everyone looking to compete in competitons.

All swimmers are actively encouraged to compete and participate in as many events as possible.  This helps the coaching team to monitor progress and also identifies the fastest swimmers which provides the basis for gala selections.

Trophies are awarded to the fastest boy and girl in each age group, stroke and distance.

Age Groups and Distances:

  • 7 yrs - 25m All Strokes
  • 8 yrs - 25m, 50m All Strokes
  • 9 yrs - 25m, 50m All Strokes
  • 10 yrs - 50m All Strokes, 100m Freestyle & Individual Medley
  • 11 yrs - 50m All Strokes, 100m Freestyle & Individual Medley
  • 12 yrs - 50m, 100m All Strokes & 100m Individual Medley
  • 13 yrs - 50m, 100m All Strokes & 100m Individual Medley
  • 14 yrs - 50m, 100m All Strokes & 100m Individual Medley
  • 15 yrs - 50m, 100m All Strokes & 100m Individual Medley
  • 16+ yrs - 50m, 100m All Strokes & 100m Individual Medley

 

Open Meets

The club will enter a number of Open Meet Competitions throughout the year.  These vary in format, ages, distances available and qualifying times.  Open Meets are open to all Ilkeston SC members 9yrs and above and are ideal competitions for anyone looking to compete. All squad swimmers are actively encouraged to enter and participate in as many events as possible.  It is a chance to gain Personal Bests, Club Records, compete against other swimmers from around the country in your own age group, build team spirit and also provides the Head Coaches with times from which to select swimmers for competitions. This helps the coaching team to monitor progress and also identifies the fastest swimmers which provides the basis for gala selections. Trophies and medals are generally awarded to the fastest boy and girl in each age group, stroke and distance.

Entry forms for these events are distributed as early as possible by the coaching team.  Completed forms should be returned with payment to the Opens Secretary at the earliest opportunity.

 

Derbyshire ASA County Championships

The County Championships are an event for the top swimmers in the county to compete for the title of being county champion.  To be able to enter this event, a swimmer must have achieved the qualifying time for the event in the 12 months prior to the competition.  The County Championships are generally held in the First Quarter of the Year.

Those swimmers that have gained a qualifying time should all be looking to enter as it is a massive achievement and honour to be able to say you have represented your club at County Level.

Trophies and medals are generally awarded to the fastest boy and girl in each age group, stroke and distance.  

Entry forms for the event are distributed as early as possible by the coaching team. Completed forms should be returned with payment to the Opens Secretary at the earliest opportunity.

Ages are determined based on age on 31st December in the year of competition.

Age Groups and Distances:

  • 10/11 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m & 200m Individual Medley; 400m Freestyle
  • 12 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 13 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 14 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 15 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 16 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 17/19 yrs - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle
  • 20+ & Open - 50m, 100m & 200m All Strokes; 100m, 200m & 400m Individual Medley; 400m & 800m(Female)/1500m(Male) Freestyle

 

Derbyshire ASA 50m Long Course County Sprints

The County Sprints are open to all Ilkeston SC members 9yrs and above and are an ideal competition for anyone looking to compete in a 50m Pool.  The competition is usually held towards the end of the year at Ponds Forge International Pool.  All squad swimmers are actively encouraged to enter and participate in as many events as possible. It is a chance to gain Personal Bests, Club Records, compete against other swimmers from around the county in your own age group, build team spirit and also provides the Head Coaches with times from which to select swimmers for competitions. This helps the coaching team to monitor progress and also identifies the fastest swimmers which provides the basis for gala selections. JC Dobb Autumn and Spring Leagues

The JC Dobb Competitions are local events for ages 8 & Over, split into a Spring League and Autumn League and consists of 6 Teams.

Each League has 3 rounds and the points gained at each gala are added together to determine the league champions.

This is a 'B' Grade competition which means 'Cut-off' times are in place.  Should a swimmer swim faster than the designated 'Cut-off' time for that event, the club will receive a 5 point penalty.

There is no limit to the number of swims each competitor can compete in.

Ages are determined based on age on the day of the final gala in each competition.

Age Groups and Distances:

  • 8/9yrs - 25m Mixed Relays, 25m Cannon
  • 10/under yrs - 25m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Mixed Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 12/under yrs - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Mixed Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 14/under yrs - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Mixed Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • Open - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Mixed Medley Relay, 25m Cannon

 

Notts & Derby Junior League

Also known as the 'Diddy' League, this is for ages 9-12 years and is a single league contested by 18-24 local teams, usually in the first half of the year.

The League has 3 rounds with the winners of each round receiving 6 points, 2nd place 5 points etc.  These league points are totalled to determine the competition winners.

There are limits to the number of swims in this competition.  9 years are only allowed to swim 2 individual events in their own age group. They are not allowed to swim individual events in older age groups but can swim in older relays.  A swimmer may swim in 3 individual events. 10 and 11 years can swim two events in their own age group and one in that immediately above.  12 years can swim 3 individual events in their own age group. There is no restriction on the number of relay swims.

Ages are determined based on the age on the day of the final gala.

Age Groups and Distances:

  • 9 yrs - 25m Individual Races, 25m Mixed Freestyle Relay, 25m Mixed Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 10 yrs - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 11 yrs - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 12 yrs - 50m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon

 

Leicester Winter League

This League is for ages 9 & Over and consists of 2 divisions of around 18-24 teams, usually in the first half of the year.  ISC is currently in division 2.

The league has 3 rounds with the winners of the first round receiving 6 points, 2nd place 5 points etc.  The second round is similar but bonus points are awarded for the best performing teams.  The third round then has double points.  The league points are totalled to determine the competition winners.  Three teams are relegated from division 1 and promoted from division 2 at the end of the competition.

Swimmers under the age of 9 years on the day of the last gala may not take part in this competition.

There are limits to the number of swims in this competition.  Swimmers aged 10 to 15 years may swim a maximum of 2 individual events in their own age group and 1 individual event in a higher age group. Swimmers 16/over may swim 3 individual events. There is no limit to the number of relay swims per swimmer. Swimmers aged 9 years may compete in relay events only.

Ages are determined based on age on 31st December in the year of competition.

Age Groups and Distances:

  • 11/under yrs - 25m Individual Races, 25m Freestyle Relay, 25m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 13/under yrs - 50m Individual Races, 50m Freestyle Relay, 50m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • 15/under yrs - 50m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, Breastroke & Freestyle, 50m Freestyle Relay, 50m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon
  • Open - 100m Individual Races, 50m Freestyle Relay, 50m Medley Relay, 25m Cannon

 

Arena League

This is a national competition for ages 9 & Over, usually contested in the second half of the year, with ISC being in the West Midlands Section.  The West Midlands is split into 4 divisions; Premier, Division 2, Division 3 West & Division 3 East.  ISC is currently in Division 3 East consisting of 15 teams.

The league has 3 rounds with the winners of the first round receiving 5 points, 2nd place 4 points etc.  The second round is similar but bonus points are awarded for the top 10 teams. The third round then has bonus points for the top 5 teams. The league points are totalled to determine the competition winners. Four teams are relegated from division 2 and promoted from division 3 at the end of the competition.

Swimmers under the age of 9 years on the day of the last gala may not take part in this competition.

There are limits to the number of swims in this competition. Swimmers aged 10 to 15 years may swim a maximum of 2 individual events in their own age group and 1 individual event in a higher age group. Swimmers 16/over may swim 3 individual events.
