Leicester League Round 3

March 25th 2017

Congratulations to Team Ilkeston swimmers after racing to a successful promotion back to division one after last nights final held at Hinckley Leisure Centre. A significant achievement considering we had to withdraw from last years league, which meant we started back in division two. #HardWorkConquersEverything

The journey back in to division one started in January at Loughborough where we made a great start finishing first in the gala with 206 gala points, which placed us in the top three of the league table. Not a bad start considering it was just after the festive period.

Going into the second round at Oadby & Wigston earlier in March, the strong form continued. Even though we struggled with a depleted team due to illness and injuries, we still finished second on the night with 194 points. It did take us down one place to fourth in the league table, however we were in a position to race at the final later that month.

The third and the final round saw the top six battle it out for promotion to division one of the Leicester Winter League. Nene Valley, Hinckley, Wellingborough, Team Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Rushden. An extremely competitive final provided a lot of excitement, ups, downs and close battles throughout the events between all teams. To complete the evening the cannon once again proved to be at its best coasting to first place with fast 25 split times from all eight swimmers.

In total there were 16 – 1st places, 4 – 2nd places, and 8 – 3rd places. All points gathered accumulated to a total of 189 points on the evening placing us in 2nd.

Well done to all that took part in the individuals and relays over all three rounds as every swim and every point counts. Well done to Nene Valley who were promoted as Champions on the evening, also promoted as runners-up were Team Ilkeston, third was Hinckley, fourth was Wellingborough, fifth was Long Eaton, and sixth was Rushden.

That means that we have achieved a Club target of reaching a final and achieving promotion on the first time of asking back into the top division. Thanks on the night to our poolside team of team managers, coaches and officials.

Ethan Hulme and Thomas Ingram were up afterwards, and both swimmers raced well and attained pbs in their events. The final event of the session was the girls 200m Freestyle and Amber Wilkins, Erin Pickard, Emma Wilkins and Tegan Hulme were all racing in the event. Great racing from all the girls with the turns and skills looking a lot stronger which led to 3/4 pbs.

Session three provided much of the same as the previous two sessions; the transfer of skills from training to race situations was great to see it put into action, and proves that it works. 16 events out of 21 races were pbs, and there were more top six finishes as follows; Finley O’Neill in the 400m Freestyle (6th), James Wright in the 400m Freestyle (6th), Tegan Hulme in the 200m Individual Medley (6th), James Wright in the 200m Butterfly (2nd), Emma Wilkins in the 100m Butterfly (4th), Thomas Ingram in the 100m Breaststroke (6th), Ethan Hulme in the 100m Breaststroke (5th), Tegan Hulme in the 200m Backstroke (6th), James Wright in the 100m Freestyle (6th).
