SWIMMING GALA & COMPETITION RESULTS

Arena League Round 2

11th Nov 2017

Team Ilkeston were hosting round 2 at Bramcote L.C on Saturday evening. It was another tough round in the NASL, but much improved from round 1 with a lot more swimmers in attendance, which made it a lot more manageable.

The teams on the night were; L1 Rykneld, L2 Camphill, L3 Bromsgrove, L4 Market Harborough, L5 Cheadle & L6 Team Ilkeston.

Eja Coe (50m Backstroke), Lewis Wright (100m Butterfly) and James Wright (100m Freestyle), all racing to first place finishes in their respective age groups and races. In the relay events, the 11/U girls were on form in their Medley Relay coming in first place in a time of 2.38.91, in comparison to round one with a 2.46.07.

Lewis Brown (100m Breaststroke), Eja Coe (50m Butterfly), Alicia Bull (50m Breaststroke), James Wright (100m Butterfly), Erin Pickard (50m Freestyle) and Lewis Wright (100m Breaststroke), all finishing in second place on the night. The 11/U girls also impressed in the Freestyle relay coming in second place in 2.20.24 a time difference of five second knocked off from the first round! The final second place was from the Open Boys Freestyle cannon in the last race of the night – very nearly making it a first place.

Louie Stadler (50m Backstroke), Lewis Brown (100m Backstroke), Katie Sloan (100m Backstroke), Jack Chambers (100m Backstroke), Finley O’Neill (50m Breaststroke) and Eja Coe (100m Butterfly). The boys 15/U Freestyle relay coming in at 2.01.01 in third place. The Open boys Medley relay team finishing in third place. Finally, the 13/U girls Freestyle relay coming in third place. A massive difference from their performance in the previous round. The round one time was 2.30.38 in 6th place, and in round two a time of 2.15.14.

That made a total of 21 top three placings out out 50 events.

It was a close gala with just 20 points separating us from 3rd place on the night. Basic mistakes such as setting off too early in a relay in this league will ultimately be the difference between finishing bottom or a place in the top three. The standard of judging is very high, so you have to be able to keep calm in these situations. Going forward, the mistakes that we made in this round will be learned from and going into the third round we’ll be much stronger. Remember – these aren’t failures, these are opportunities to learn and develop.

Final points and placings on the night were:

Well done to all swimmers that raced on the night!

As you all know, we hosted the league gala, and it required a lot of helpers to make it a success. So, thank you to all that helped in all of your positions on the night, from officiating in all roles, team management, recording, announcing, door entry, health and safety, refreshments, lane end and splits. It is really appreciated!

Long Eaton Distance Meet

Oct 22nd 2017

Six swimmers were representing Ilkeston at the LE Distance Open at Queens Street in Derby. James & Sam were both in the 1500m Freestyle, which started in the morning. The first time that James had raced this event and he paced it well coming in on a 21.08.74. Sam has swam the event before, so he knew what to expect. Sam was consistent with his entry time, and also racing his final 1500m under Team Ilkeston.

Session two saw Eve Beharall, Eja Coe and Erin Pickard take on the 400m Freestyle. It was Eve’s first time racing a 400m Freestyle, and she looked strong coming in with a time of 5.36.31, ten seconds faster than previously raced at a time trial. Eja also raced her first official 400m Freestyle coming in 1st place and in a time of 5.21.42. Erin has raced the 400m Freestyle a few weeks earlier at the DX open posting a time of 5.47.89. At the LE meet, Erin posted a new time of 5.46.62.

Session three was Erin and Eve who were both racing the 800m Freestyle for the first time. Both swimmers looked strong and skillful with Erin posting a 11.53.18, and Eve coming in at 11.20.28. To finish off the third session, Angela Guilfoyle completed her 800m in a time of 10.50.07.

Session four, the final session of the day! Eja in the 400m Individual Medley – again the first time that she had raced this officially for a time on the rankings. A good swim coming in at 6.00.63 in first place.

Arena League Round 1

14th Oct 2017

Well done to those who were racing at the first round of the Arena League on Saturday night at Stechford Cascades in Birmingham. The first round draw saw us race some new teams since the league amalgamated the east and west divisions, which was refreshing, but also challenging in a positive sense.

Skills were looking sharp, and to finish in 6th place didn’t really do us any justice. A big well done to all of the 11/u & 13/u girls that stepped up to cover individual and relay races in the 15/u category. It is always a daunting prospect to stand up against someone a lot older, however those swimmers handled it exceptionally well.

The placings did not do justice with Ilkeston only 16 points off 3rd place. Next round, with a full team, we should be a lot stronger!

A total of eight 1st places from the Girls 11/u Freestyle relay, Eja Coe in the 11/u 50m Backstroke, Lewis Brown in the 13/u 100m Breaststroke, Eja Coe in the 11/u 50m Butterfly, Lewis Wright in the 15/u 100m Butterfly, Lewis Wright in the 15/u 100m Freestyle, the Girls 11/u Medley Relay, and the Open Boys Freestyle relay!

Four 2nd positions from the Boys 13/u Medley Relay, Tegan Hulme in the 13/u 100m Backstroke, Alicia Bull in the 11/u 50m Breaststroke, and Finley O’Neill in the 11/u 50m Breaststroke!

Six 3rd places from Charlie Palmer in the Open 100m Butterfly, Lewis Brown in the 13/u 100m Backstroke, Jack Chambers in the Open 100m Backstroke, James Wright in the 13/u 100m Butterfly, Katie Tompkins in the 11/u 50m Freestyle, and the 13/u Freestyle relay!

Still plenty of scope to improve further, however a good start to the season. Medals (six for James, two for Lewis, and one for Josh).
